Flooding, drainage and sewerage

The Council is able to offer advice on drainage issues as part of its Public Health Duty. Private Drainage including Cesspits and Septic Tanks are the responsibility of the owners or occupiers it serves. For tenanted properties this responsibility lies with the Landlord.

In the event that private drainage matters are not resolved, the Council will remedy the problem through use of its enforcement powers.

Who Is responsible for a Blocked Drain? Drains and Sewer Responsibilities depends upon where the blockage has occurred in the sewer network serving your property. Firstly, it needs to be established if the blockage is on a public sewer or a private drain.

Cesspools and Septic Tanks

A Cesspools and Septic Tank is a sealed underground storage tank which holds sewage until it is emptied out and disposed of. It may be brick or block construction or manufactured in steel or reinforced glass fibre.

Road Drains and Gullies

Dudley Council is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of pedestrian street drains and gullies that are on the public highway. These are the gullies that run along the kerbside, carrying rainwater away.

Public Sewerage

Severn Trent Water Ltd (Water and Sewerage) are responsible for maintaining public sewers and water mains in the borough.
