Gritting and Snow Clearance

Winter Gritting Routes

Regular and detailed weather forecasts, which predict the conditions on Dudley's roads, help us to make decisions about when and where to salt on our routes. We aim to grit the precautionary network of roads before the onset of any hazardous conditions, although this sometimes isn't practical.

During periods of very bad weather gritting the routes may take longer than usual. We'll use all our resources to clear the primary routes and the remaining routes in priority order.

As this may take a number of days the weather may have improved and conditions cleared before we are able to complete work on all routes.

Our teams are on stand-by to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the winter service period.

Find out which roads are gritted

Use the online search to find out if your street is on a gritting route.

Please note the inclusion of a street name does not mean that the whole of the road is treated. In addition, streets may be removed or added as appropriate over the course of a winter and we will make every endeavour to ensure that the list below is correct.

If you have any reason to suspect that the information is incorrect then please contact us.

Grit bins / salt bins

There are almost 800 grit/salt bins throughout the borough. Bins are usually sited on minor roads not included in the Principal Road Network but which are considered potentially hazardous e.g. those with particular features such as a steep hill or an elderly people’s home. Grit bins / salt bins are placed on site well in advance of the winter period and are regularly checked and restocked and when necessary.

How we deal with Winter Weather

The British winter is unpredictable, bad weather can strike suddenly. If your journey is unavoidable, make sure you are prepared for the conditions. Never assume a road has been salted. Always listen to local and national radio for travel information.

British winters are not predictable. This can cause us a real problem as bad weather can strike suddenly and severely. It doesn’t have to be very cold for the road surface to freeze. In winter road surface temperatures can be up to 4 degrees colder than the air temperature.

Winter Motoring

Don't leave yourself in the cold. Winter Motoring requires special care and a little preparation if you're to avoid a breakdown or accident.

Emergency Winter Damage

Section 31 Grant – Public Statement

Following two of the worst winters in recent times, last winter was again very severe with a further damaging effect on the road network, both nationally and locally.
