Leadership and Management in Dudley
Aiming for Excellence
At Dudley, we are ambitious for the future. We want Dudley to be a high quality place to live, work and spend leisure time for all of our residents and visitors. A place where people enjoy good health, feel safe and achieve high aspirations for themselves and their families, where they feel pride in their culturally rich and successful community. In all that we do we want our actions to help create a fairer society for all.
To achieve this vision we set challenging targets. Excellence in leadership and management throughout the Council is a critical success factor. So, we researched the kinds of things that successful leaders and managers do – the kinds of values and actions that inspire and support staff, the kind of culture that supports innovation, and the qualities that make a real difference. We talked to many people working at all levels in the Council to help define the leadership style that will deliver our ambitions. The aspirations in this leaflet are therefore very much "our aspirations".
Of course, leadership is a part of every manager's job, but many other staff also use leadership and management skills in the context of their responsibilities. Put simply, leadership is about vision, setting improvement challenges, inspiring and empowering people, whilst management is about driving forward service delivery, and organising, planning and monitoring the work of others and themselves. This leaflet therefore speaks to everyone.
