5 - Autumn to spring walks

Archived news release from 2007

Borough residents can get out and get fit thanks to an extended walking programme this autumn.

The programme builds on the success of the green fit, walk fit and buggy fit led walks which take residents on supported walks through some of the borough’s green areas.

Dudley Council’s parks team organises the walks with the support of Dudley PCT.

This latest series develops the popular park and nature reserve walks offering walks that take in local history and visitor attractions, walks for parents and children and wheelchair friendly routes among others.

These include a Wordsley walk which takes in exhibitions at the Red House Glass Cone, a local history walk around Saltwells nature reserve, a gentle six week programme for people with weight or health problems who want to start a supported exercise programme, walks over the Christmas period to combat festive overindulgence and a walk through the grounds of Himley Park. Many of the regular weekly walk routes vary to provide variety to participants.

The walks are open to anyone who wants to get out in the fresh air as part of a regular fitness programme. The activities help participants to get fit, socialise and relax in a safe, calming green environment.

Each walk is delivered by a qualified walk leader. Participants can walk at their own pace and won’t be left behind. It’s a fun, safe and easy way to get fit and meet new people. Best of all its free.

Councillor Charles Fraser Macnamara, cabinet member for leisure and culture said:
“This extended walking programme offers something for everyone, from mums with buggies, to people starting on an exercise programme to keen ramblers.

“These free sessions provide a great way to get fit and make new friends.”

Participants need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and arrive at the meeting point ten minutes before the walk starts. Dogs are welcome on most walks. There is no need to book.
