16 - Young people invited to get involved with Anti-bullying Week

Archived news release from 2007
A major drive to raise awareness of the dangers of bullying among young people in Dudley starts next week with Anti-bullying Week.

A range of activities are taking place throughout the borough to help highlight the serious implications of bullying and ways of tackling it.

On November 23 Dudley Council will be helping to raise funds to prevent bullying by taking part in Blue Friday. It is part of a national campaign where staff will be encouraged to donate money to the fund, and wear blue to work.

Dudley Council is also setting up a link on the website to allow people to access helpful advice on tackling bullying, and information leaflets for young people have been sent to youth centres and libraries.

The Connexions bus will be at the Merry Hill shopping centre on November 24. Police community support officers from Brierley Hill police station will be handing out leaflets and an anti-bullying quiz to promote the week-long initiative.

A DVD produced by pupils at Cradley High which outlines the serious consequences of bullying and highlights the help that is available for victims has been distributed across the borough for use with young people.

Safer Travel police team, made up of officers and police community support officers, will be at bus stations in the area to pass on help and advice about tackling bullying.

Dudley College will be holding an anti bullying 'market place' in their main hall on Monday November 19 to promote the issues around bullying.

Councillor Anne Millward, cabinet member for community safety, said:

“We want people to know that bullying is unacceptable in any form, and there is help for the victims.
“This week is about raising that awareness and getting people involved to show them how serious bullying can be, and the help and support that is available.”

Anti-bullying Week is a national initiative and runs from November 19-23. It is aimed at preventing and responding to issues of bulling in school and the wider community. The Safe & Sound Partnership has been involved in setting up a range of events throughout the borough during the week.
