14 - Young carer in line for top awardYoung carer in line for top award

Archived news release from 2007

A caring 11-year-old boy from Stourbridge is in the running for a top award in recognition of his hard work in looking after his parents.

Stuart Green is up against three other carers in a televised vote for the award run by Central News.

Stuart looks after his mum Tracey Richardson and step dad Robert Jones, who both suffer from epilepsy.

He also helps out with events at the Woodside Day Centre in Highgate Road, Dudley, such as fund raising and social activities.
Staff at the centre nominated him for the award, after being impressed with his hard work.

Jacqui Hohn, senior day care officer at Woodside said:

“He is a lovely lad, very caring and very thoughtful.
“He offers care and support to both his mother and step father, but plays and has fun as well.
“The staff at Woodside are delighted he is being recognised for the hard work and dedication he puts in.”

On September 21 viewers will vote for the carer they think is the most deserving of the award. The winner will also go on to represent the region at the Pride of Britain Awards in London, in October.

Stuart spends a lot of his time looking after his parents at their home in Queensway, Wollescote.
He carries out daily chores such as shopping and helps his mum and step dad through any ill health.

Stuart’s mum Tracey added:
"Stuart has a respect for other people.  He has saved my life many times and calmed doctors when I have had a fit.
He is a wonderful, caring and helpful son, and I am very proud of him."

It is not the first time the Pedmore Technology College and Community School pupil has been recognised for his hard work. In 2003 he received a letter from the Queen congratulating him, after his mum wrote to the palace.

Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:

“It’s great to see young people caring for people in the community. I wish Stuart every success for the future.”

The televised vote airs on Central News in September 21. The winner will be announced on September 24.
