25 - Youth council chair returns from Argentina for awards night

Archived news release from 2007

The chair of Dudley Youth Council has returned to the UK from Argentina in time for the prestigious awards evening in October.

Eighteen-year old, Sarah Chandler spent the month of August with the indigenous Wichi and Toba communities building a community centre and developing relationships with the local people of Ingenieros Juarez.  Sarah came back to the UK because of her prior commitment to attend the youth awards which are being held on 11 October but will be returning to Argentina in January.
Sarah will be running an Argentinean goods sale to raise funds to aid the volunteers’ work on 26th October at Holy Trinity Church, Wordsley.  The national drink ‘mate’, which is an herbal brew and traditional food, will be available to try and everyone is welcome. She will also be telling stories and showing photos of her adventurous trip.
The youth council has received 80 nominations for the youth awards which have seven categories: sport; bravery and courage; arts and entertainment; contributions to school/college and community; charity and voluntary work (group and individual award); and the Mary Growcott award for adults who have made a contribution to youth groups.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“The youth awards night is a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of the young people in the borough.  The work that Sarah has been doing abroad is a great example of just some of the work that is going on and she is an inspiration to others.  We are really pleased to have received so many nominations for the awards and the evening should be a real celebration.”
