Sixty children visited the keeping Brierley Hill moving site office yesterday (Thurs) to receive a road safety talk ahead of the new road opening on Monday.
Two groups of nine and ten year olds (years five and six) from Brierley Hill primary school visited the office in Little Cottage Street, where they received some interesting facts and figures about the new road.
The council’s road safety team then gave a talk on planning safe journeys, crossing safely and highlighted the ‘be safe be seen’ campaign which encourages children and young people to ensure they are visible on dark evenings.
The visit concluded with a walk along a section of the new road where a challenge was set to see if the children could guess the number of bricks used along the route.
Competition entries will be collected from the school and the child who guesses to the closest thousand will be presented with a book voucher worth £25.
From next Monday motorists and road users will be able to access the full length of the new road, which aims to tackle traffic congestion in and around Brierley Hill, for the first time.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“This is a major new road for the town and it’s important that children know about the new layout and where they can cross safely.
“With winter approaching and dark evenings upon us it’s also timely to ensure that children know they must be visible on dark evenings.
“The safety of all children and young people in the borough is paramount.”
The official opening of the new road will take place on November 6 2008.
