3 - Swashbuckling day of family fun

Archived news release from 2008

Young children and families can look forward to a swashbuckling day of family fun this month when they celebrate National Bookstart Day.

Organised as part of Children’s Book Week, National Bookstart Day aims to help every child develop a lifelong love of books.  It is anticipated that this year’s theme, Pirates Ahoy, will offer more parents and children the opportunity to enjoy reading together.

On Friday October 10, pirates will take over Stourbridge family and children’s for a special themed party where nursery children will listen to pirate stories and receive their free Bookstart treasure chest.  On the day, storyteller Julie Cooper will also perform pirate tales at Stourbridge Library from 11am.

Pirate fever will spread to all libraries as pirates join rattle and rhyme sessions at every library from Monday October 6 to Friday October 10.  Contact local libraries for further details.

All the activities are free and all children will receive a free copy of the book as part of the programme.

Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said:
“This is a fantastic theme for this year’s celebrations and highlights just how much fun reading and a little imagination can bring.  I hope it will encourage more families to come along to a borough library and enjoy the opportunity to read together”.

Library staff will also visit Dudley Zoo to promote Bookstart on Saturday October 11 from 11am to 4pm.  During their visit, staff will urge more people to become a member of the library service and make the most of all the services it has to offer including thousands of free books to choose from and free computer and internet access.
