There’s a new girl starting at a Dudley borough school – Connie the guide dog.
Amy Kettle, a year ten student at The Earls High School in Halesowen, is one of only 16 students to be chosen as part of a national trial being run by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
The dog will be with Amy throughout her school day attending the majority of lessons and accompanying her on break times.
Amy who has a raremitochondrial disorder called Kearns-Sayre syndrome had to pass an assessment before being matched with guide dog Connie whose 12 month training programme will start on Monday 31 October.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“I would like to thank The Earls High School for the continued support everyone has given to Amy over the years and for enabling her to take part in the trial.
“Connie the guide dog will have such a positive impact on Amy’s life giving her the independence and mobility to travel to and from school without support.”
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association give partially sighted adults and young people the chance to build vital communication and mobility skills by placing guide dogs with families and schools.
