8 - Shoppers to be encouraged to switch to real nappies

Parents Shopping at Merry Hill will be encouraged to make the switch from disposable to washable nappies in time for national Real Nappy Week (Monday 21 to Sunday 28 April).

Real nappy sessions will take place at the centre’s Debenhams on Tuesday 15 and Tuesday 29 April from 10am to 11.30am. Amanda Jowett, real nappy advisor and midwife, will be on hand throughout the sessions to answer any questions and give demonstrations.

Parents attending the sessions will be encouraged to sign up to Dudley Council’s real nappy incentive scheme, which enables parents living in the borough to claim £30 when they spend over £50 on washable nappies.

Anyone who attends the sessions will also be entered into a free prize draw to win a trial pack worth £50, which will include five micro nappies, one Velcro style cover and a roll of biodegradable flushable liners.

Christopher Jenkins, waste minimisation and education officer, said:

“We’re very excited about Real Nappy Week and with our road show we’re hoping lots of parents will opt for this more environmentally friendly alternative.

“The average parent in Dudley could save up to £550 on their first child by making the switch, with greater savings if the nappies are reused on younger siblings.”

In the UK alone, eight million disposable nappies are thrown away everyday, meaning the average baby will fill about 40 rubbish bins before he or she is potty trained.

Amanda Jowett also holds a regular session the first Wednesday of every month from 10.30am to 12pm at Dudley Council Plus.
