Even more Dudley borough youngsters can turn to pedal power after a cycle training scheme received a £40,000 boost.
Dudley Council’s cycle training scheme scooped the cash from the Department for Transport following its previous success delivering top quality training. The scheme has also been accredited as a ‘Bikeability’ provider, the new national cycle training award for young people.
Already this year, 1,300 Year Five children in 40 Dudley schools have put their pedal power into action by receiving on-road cycle training, along with a 100 teenagers and adults.
John Millar, director of the urban environment, said:
“In Dudley more and more children and their parents are choosing to cycle or walk to school. Cycling is great exercise and good for the environment – as well as helping to reduce congestion. The training we offer aims to make it safer and easier for everyone in the borough to get on their bike.”
The training is delivered by a team of instructors following the National Standards for Cycle Training. There are three levels.
The first teaches bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from the roads. The second provides the skills and understanding to make a trip on quiet roads and the third helps cyclist make a trip on busy roads, using complex junctions.
