11 - Broadfield glass artist staging masterclass

Broadfield House Glass Museum-based artist and local favourite, Allister Malcolm has been invited to stage a beginners masterclass at this summer’s International Festival of Glass.

Allister is a skilled glassblower and hot caster, known for his subtle yet exciting use of colour and form. He has exhibited throughout the UK and the USA and has an exhibition at Wordsley’s Red House Glass Cone opening on 14 June.

He is currently running his own studio at the Kingswinford museum and is employed as a hot glass lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton. He has produced glass for Dudley Council’s Civic Awards and created the glass crown and pendant worn by Dudley’s Queen of Culture, Pat Wakelam.

Broadfield House Glass Museum is the perfect resource for inspiration with a wide range of exhibitions on site. Students will gain an insight into and practise the art of glassblowing. The small class provides the opportunity for total beginners to have a go at all stages of the creation of a blown vessel. It also gives the more experienced a chance to fine-tune existing skills. As skills progress, the use of colour will be encouraged in a variety of forms to develop and create your own unique piece.

Duncan Lowndes, assistant director for culture and leisure said:
“Broadfield House Glass Museum is a celebrated and inspiring venue, perfect for this small masterclass. Allister himself is a patient and responsive teacher, ideally suited for the novice glassmaker and I’m sure the sessions will attract a great deal of interest.”

There are two, two day sessions which students can choose from during August. The first class is held on Monday 18 from 1.30pm to 5pm and Tuesday 19 August from 9am to 5pm. The second follows on Wednesday 20 from 9am to 5pm and Thursday 21 from 9am to 12.30pm.

Both classes will be held at Broadfield House Glass Museum and no experience is necessary. Each course costs £160 and can take a maximum of four students. The price includes one evening event and an invitation to the opening of the British Glass Biennale. Allister’s masterclass is one of a programme of masterclasses preceding the International Festival of Glass.
