11 - Council service nominated for top award

A support scheme for borough carers is up for a top regional award after being short-listed in the West Midlands Health and Social Care awards.

The Dudley Mental Health Carers Forum was short-listed in the mental health and well being category.

The forum is made up of carers, people from the voluntary sector and health and social care professionals from Dudley Council and Dudley PCT.  It aims to ensure that suitable and timely support is offered to carers of people with mental health needs in Dudley borough.

The forum worked as a team to improve assessments and guidance, develop staff training and support the development of carers groups and new services.

This has led to a substantial increase in the number of carers supported. In addition there are strong carers groups, working in the community including the Dudley Carers in Partnership for Mental Health.  Staff are also more aware of how they can support carers on a day-to-day basis.

Linda Sanders, director for adult, community and housing services, said:
“To be short-listed for this award is recognition in itself of the hard work and dedication that staff, carers and volunteers have given in recent years to make this project a success and to achieve the forum’s overall aim, to provide support to more borough carers.  Congratulations to everyone involved for getting this far.”

Representatives from the forum will attend the West Midlands health and social care awards dinner to find out if they have been successful on Tuesday April 15.  If successful, the forum will go through to the national awards later this year.

For more information about the forum, contact the carers co-ordinator on 01384 818723.
