8 - Dudley students on stage with West End stars

Young people from four Dudley schools joined some of musical theatres biggest stars at the weekend.

Students from the schools of Kingswinford, Summerhill, Wordsley and Crestwood performed their production Showtime! at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre on Sunday (6 April).  Performing alongside the students were Ramin Karimloo, currently starring as The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, Kerry Ellis who appears as Elphaba in the hit show Wicked and Daniel Boys and Rebecca Lock, currently starring in Avenue Q.

The students amazed friends and relatives with their professionalism and outstanding singing performances.  The production was a culmination of a two year BTEC Young Apprenticeship Performing Arts course, funded by the Learning Skills Council, which has been a collaboration between the schools who are part of the Dudley West Consortium.  The students have been tutored by professional actors and directors, Chris and Lucy Key, and also engaged with many professional artists for master classes and workshops, as well as visiting several West End productions.

John Freeman, director of Dudley Council’s children’s services said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the students were outstanding. Many hours of hard work put in by everyone involved in the production and this was clear to see by the polished performances.  I was privileged to attend the one-and-only performance and proud to be representing Dudley schools at the evening.”
