7 - Leasowes restoration starts in May

Work to transform an historic Halesowen park to its former glory is to get under way in May.

Contractor Alun Griffiths has been appointed to carry out the long-awaited restoration of The Leasowes, which will see William Shenstone’s landscape brought back to life.

The project has received £1.3 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The scheme at the Grade 1 listed park involves the recreation of the 18th century Beechwater dam and cascade as well as pools and cascades at Virgil’s Grove. Walkways will be restored, new paths installed to improve disabled access to the site and there will be additional planting to help return the woodland to its historic 1740’s layout.

Rupert Dugdale, head of economic regeneration delivery, said:
“We are delighted that we can finally press ahead with this exciting scheme to rebuild the historic Grade 1 listed 18th century landscape to 21st century standards.

“The delays to the scheme have been extremely disappointing, but were due to the complexity of the project which marries engineering expertise with landscape restoration.

“We did not have any plans existing from Shenstone’s original design and have carried out extensive research and feasibility work to ensure we can recreate his landscape.

“We are now looking forward to work starting on the ground and seeing this 18th century historic landscape brought back to life.”

Alun Griffiths was chosen following a rigorous selection process for its considerable experience in quality heritage, landscape and civil engineering schemes.

The restoration works, some of which has already been completed, will cost £2m, with £1.3m coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Anne Jenkins, regional manager for HLF West Midlands, said:
“We are delighted to see work start on The Leasowes. It is significant in that it is considered to be one of the first natural landscape gardens in England.

“We look forward to the time when visitors and the community can enjoy the landscape once again in all its former glory.”
