A group of budding editors have put together a community safety magazine for young people in the borough.
With the support of Dudley Council’s community safety team, ‘be safe not sorry’ has been created by a group of young people who attend Amblecote Christian Centre youth club.
Overall, 14 young people, aged 12 to15 were involved in the project, which covers general community safety issues relevant to young people today.
Topics include internet safety, personal safety/robbery, including a top ten list of safety tips and a problem page looking at issues including running away from home, domestic abuse and peer pressure. There’s also information about carrying weapons in the magazine which was put together by the council’s youth offending service.
Amy Maybury and Shonah O’Connell were the driving force behind the magazine, completing articles and deciding on the name and final layout. Amy and Shonah have both been awarded a Youth Challenge accreditation in recognition of their hard work.
Dawn Hewitt, head of community safety at Dudley Council, said:
“No-one knows the issues facing young people better than young people themselves and it’s great that Amy and Shonah were so proactive in pulling the magazine together – they’ve done a great job.”
The launch of the magazine will take place on Thursday 10 April, 6pm at Saltwells EDC, Bowling Green Road, Netherton.
The magazine is available in hard copy and CD format from youth centres and various other venues across the borough. It can also be downloaded at www.dudleysafeandsound.org.uk
The project has been funded by West Midlands Police Authority through Barnados Dudley Life Skills Partnership.
