12 - Big clean for schools

Archived news release from 2008

Borough businesses are linking up with Dudley Council to spruce up schools while they’re out for the summer.

This year Dudley’s education business partnership has planned a number of spring cleans. These include the re-painting of the sports equipment building at Peters Hill Primary School by a group of volunteers from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals which took place last Thursday (Aug 7).

Seven members of Pfizer’s staff volunteered for the day to help with the work as well as donating £200 to buy materials to help with the restoration work.

The volunteers donned their gloves and set about removing the graffiti that covered the sports equipment containers before replacing it with a colourful mural designed by school student Lewis Marsh.

Also last week, 20 members of staff from Brierley Hill based IHG (Intercontinental Hotels Group) volunteered for two days to renovate the dining hall at another borough primary school.

This took place last Friday and Saturday (Aug 8 and 9) after staff at IHG’s  regional sales centre held a meeting with the pupil run school council at Quarry Bank Primary School to discuss the work and find out what they would like to see happen. It was decided that the hall should be divided into two areas, a rock café and a teddy bears picnic area which were both repainted.

IHG is a global hotel chain which operates in more than 100 countries across six continents.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services said:
“I am so pleased to see local businesses working with the schools and putting something back into the community. I think this a fantastic initiative and I hope to see more projects like this happening in the future.”

Meanwhile earlier in the year Kingswinford based Omron Automotive Electronics Ltd celebrated its Founders Day by rejuvenating a plot of neglected land at Jesson’s Primary School.

A team of 11 staff from the engineering company volunteered for a day to prune and tidy the overgrown garden area as well as giving a face lift to all the school railings and fences.

If you or members of your company would like to volunteer to spring clean a school please contact Corin Gregory on 01384 813719.
