Children across the borough are urged to follow the success of Team GB and clinch gold by completing this year’s summer reading challenge.
So far, more than 1,700 children aged four to 12 have signed up to the challenge to read six books, which this year is based on a sporting theme in support of the Beijing Olympics 2008.
Children who haven’t yet signed up to the challenge are reminded that it’s not too late to sign up but are urged to do so quickly as the challenge comes to an end on September 6.
All children who complete the challenge will receive a gold medal and certificate and will be entered into a prize draw. Winners will receive one of many prizes which include family tickets to the MonkeyForest at TrenthamGardens, WestMidlandsSafari Park, Black CountryLivingMuseum, Severn Valley Railway and the Crystal Leisure Centre.
The winners of the prize draw will also be invited to a Team Read celebration event at Saltwells EDC on September 23. Performance poet Craig Bradley will be there to entertain.
Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said:
“Children can just pop along to a local library to sign up to the challenge for free. All borough libraries are still hosting regular craft and reading activities as part of the challenge. For details contact one of the borough’s libraries or go to www.dudley.gov.uk/libraries to find out more”.
Young people aged 13 or above are also reminded it’s not too late to sign up to Extreme Team Read. Again the challenge is to read six books but they can also go interactive at www.teamread.co.uk. They just need to collect a membership card from their nearest library to sign up to the website.
