A national expert on children’s rights has visited a Dudley residential unit to get views directly from its young people.
Children and young people with learning and physical disabilities from Tipton Road children’s unit had one-to-one chats to Dr Roger Morgan OBE, children’s rights director for England.
Dr Morgan interviewed the children using a communications technique called, Widget, for their advice. Their views will be used in the contents of the future National Minimum Standards for looked after children which ensure the welfare of children and young people in children's homes and foster care, pupils in boarding schools and residential special schools, and students in residential further education colleges. The information will contribute to the views of a total of 700 young people across the UK.
All 700 children were invited to Drayton Manor in July as part of the seventh children’s right conference. Staff at Tipton Road took their residents to join in the fun day out but requested a personal visit so that their young people would each have a chance to have their say.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services said:
“The young people and staff at Tipton Road very much appreciated the time taken by the children’s rights director to visit them following the main conference date. The results of the consultation will ensure that we provide the best possible service for all of the children in local authority care.”
