Dudley Council is celebrating national Playday this Wednesday (6 August) by opening brand new play areas across the borough.
National Playday is the annual celebration of children’s right to play. To mark this year’s event Dudley Council is organising a variety of activities at the recently completed Big Lottery Fund play areas at Netherbrook Primary School, Netherton, Chapel Street, Brierley Hill, Tenacre Lane, Upper Gornal and Wollescote Park in Stourbridge.
The theme for this year’s Playday campaign is ‘Give us a go’ and encourages children and young people to try challenging and adventurous play opportunities. The new facilities will provide just that, with three multi-use games areas, two children’s play areas and a skate park.
Dudley Council was awarded £690,320 lottery funding in June 2007 for its play strategy to improve children’s play provision across the borough. This funding has now been increased by over £2.6 million through the government’s national Play Pathfinder programme.
Dudley Council was selected by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to be one of 20 national pathfinders earlier this year. The play pathfinder programme works with children, young people and their communities to ensure all children have the opportunity to play actively and safely outdoors.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“Playday is a marvellous opportunity for children to get outside and play with their friends and families. We are very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for the funding to build and improve children’s play areas which are very important to so many Dudley youngsters.”
John Taylor, head of west midlands region, Big Lottery Fund, added:
“This funding is great news for the parents and children of Dudley. Play helps build healthy bodies and can open the door to fitness and future sporting interests. The Playday celebrations will give children an opportunity to try out the new play facilities and I am sure they will be delighted with them”.
During national Playday special activities will also be held at the Dudley Environment Zone in Lower Gornal. For further information about all the play activities visit: www.justenjoy.tv
