12 - Mayor opens assessment centre

Archived news release from 2008
Launch of assisted living centre The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Ray Burston with Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services and Linda Sanders, director of adult, community and housing services.

The Mayor of Dudley officially recently opened the borough’s assisted living centre at its new location.

The assessment centre gives disabled people and their carers the opportunity to view and try a range of equipment which will support independent living.

Having relocated to a larger facility attached to Jack Newell Court in Coseley, Councillor Ray Burston, the Mayor of Dudley, was invited to officially open the centre, take a tour of the new facilities and find out how it’s making a difference to people’s lives.

During his visit, the Mayor took the opportunity to test some of the equipment and meet members of the team who are qualified to carry out full assessments at the centre and identify what equipment is suitable for individuals.

Equipment could be anything from kitchen aids to help with feeding and cooking, equipment to help people get in and out of bed and a range of items which can help people use their bath safely, plus toilet and shower aids.

Examples of specialist seating are also available for people to try as well as equipment to help them get up and down stairs, such as a fully operational stair lift and vertical lift.

The majority of the equipment is available on permanent loan from the council. Other items are for demonstration only, but the team can advise where they can be bought.

Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:
“The assisted living centre offers borough residents the opportunity to test equipment in a realistic setting such as a kitchen, living room, bathroom or bedroom, which gives them a good idea of how it could help them in their home.

“Congratulations to the team for successfully relocating the centre.  It’s a fantastic service and I would urge people to contact the centre to find out if they are eligible for support.”

The equipment is free for people who live within Dudley borough who have been assessed and are eligible.  People can be referred by their GP, social worker or can refer themselves.  To find out more about the centre or to book an appointment call the occupational therapy team on 01384 813090.
