Archived news release from 2008

Activities continue this August at local nature reserves with fossil hunts, bird days, kite making, butterfly and insect events.

There is a children’s geological trail over the Wren’s Nest on Wednesday 20 August at 10am to 12.30pm. The walk follows the tour, developed by children of Bramford primary school, and free copies of the trail are available on the day.  The walk finishes with a trip to fossil mountain where participants can search for their very own Dudley bug. The walk is suitable for children aged 7 to12 but they must be accompanied by an adult. Meeting point is Dudley College in the Mons Hill car park. Booking is essential on 01384 812785.

Also on the 20 August from 10am to 4pm there is an RSPB guided walk and birding activities day. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The walk meets at The Leasowes, off Mucklow Hill, Halesowen.  For further details please call 01384 814642.

Hunt the Dudley bug takes place on Tuesday 26 August from 10am to 12.30pm.  Participants can join the warden in a fascinating step back in time to when Dudley was under a tropical sea. Participants can look for the fossilised remains of sea lilies, lamp shells, corals and trilobites, and take any found fossils home.

The walk meets at Mons Hill College car park, Wren’s Hill Road, Dudley. Booking is essential on 01384 812785 and children must be accompanied by an adult.

On Wednesday 27 August from 10am to 1pm there’s another of the popular over and under Dudley sessions at Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve. Participants can explore the mines by boat and later hunt for fossils on the reserve.

This activity starts at Dudley Canal Trust, Todds End Car Park, off Birmingham New Road, Dudley. Sensible clothing is required. There is a charge for the boat trip; adults £4.75, seniors £4.30, children £3.95, family (two adults and two children) £15.90 (two adults and three children) £19.50. Booking is essential on 01384 815575.

On the same day at the Wardens Base at The Leasowes from 10am to noon there’s a kite making and flying day. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential on 01384 814642. Meet at The Leasowes, off Mucklow Hill, Halesowen.

Residents can discover and learn about the butterflies and creepy creatures which live in Saltwells wood during a butterfly walk on Tuesday 19 August from 10.30am to 12.30pm and a popular minibeast hunt on Wednesday 27 August from 10am to 11.30am. No dogs are allowed and only ten places are available. Meet at Saltwells car park, off Saltwells Lane, Quarry Bank. Booking is essential on 01384 812795.  Also on 27 August the RSPB will be at Saltwells from 10 to 11.30am providing information on birds and activities.

Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. All children must be accompanied and booking is essential for most walks.
