5 - The Benefits Shop is moving

Archived news release from 2008

A popular council benefits service which has helped thousands of people receive unclaimed money is moving to new premises in Dudley.

The Benefits Shop is moving from Churchill shopping centre in Dudley to the old Banking Hall in nearby Priory Street later this month (AUG).

The Dudley Council advice service has been running for 20 years and has helped more than 204,000 customers across Dudley receive over £24.6million in previously unclaimed benefits.

The refurbished premises in Priory Street will boast screened areas for private consultations and better access for people with disabilities.

Councillor Anne Millward, cabinet member for finance, said:

“The move to new premises will offer better surroundings and facilities for our customers, but the excellent service will remain the same.

“The Benefits Shop has helped thousands of people claim the money they are entitled to and that will continue from its new home.”

The move is essential to make way for proposed redevelopment by the owners of the Churchill site.

The service will continue to run as normal from the current site until the move. It offers information and advice in claiming benefits to all residents across the borough, including help filling in forms, negotiating with the Department for Works and Pensions and the Inland Revenue and support in reviews and  appeals of benefits.

Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Telephone advice is also available from 9.30-noon each day, as well as 2-4pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The shop will be closed on August 15 and re-open at the new site on August 18.
