5 - Works to begin on Crystal revamp

Archived news release from 2008

An exciting £800,000 revamp of Stourbridge’s Crystal Leisure Centre gets under way this week.

The transformation of the fitness suite at the centre in Bell Street, which marks the biggest investment ever in its 18-year-old history, will start this Thursday. Workers will be on site to move existing gym equipment to a temporary location in the centre while work on the new suite takes place.

While the work is carried out people are reminded that the gym facilities at the centre will be closed on Thursday and Friday (August 7 and 8). The gym will re-open in its temporary location downstairs next to the sports hall on Saturday.

Works will then begin to refurbish and extend the fitness suite before 53 pieces of state-of-the-art fitness equipment are introduced to the new-look gym. The centre will feature a combination of cardiovascular equipment with personalised freeview TVs and high quality resistance equipment. Special data keys, allowing members to follow their own fitness programme and record their progress, will also be available.

The new facility will be located in the space currently occupied by the existing gym and the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi, which will not be replaced. The new fitness suite will be much larger than the existing facility and offer equipment for people of all ages and abilities. It will also include a section specifically aimed at young people aged 14 and older, featuring equipment such as dance mats and trixster bikes.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:
“The improvements made to the facilities at Halesowen Leisure Centre have been hugely popular. We are pleased that work is now set to start on turning the proposals at the Crystal Leisure Centre into a reality. We would like to remind people that the facilities will be closed on Thursday and Friday while the existing equipment is moved to its new temporary location while the works are carried out.

“The new fitness suite, together with the 25m and leisure pools will certainly ensure that the Crystal Leisure Centre continues to offer excellent facilities for people of all ages and interests.”

The makeover will cost around £800,000 while an additional £50,000 will be invested to improve signage and access to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
