11 - Halesowen swimmers making great waves for charity

Archived news release from 2007

Two teenagers from Halesowen Swimming Club will swim the distance English Channel this weekend to raise money for Children in Need.

Roxy Taylor and Jessica Northall, both aged 15, train with the swimming club at Dudley Council’s Halesowen Leisure Centre several times a week. The two will swim across the distance at the centre in relay and will cover over 21 miles between them.

The club, which has been running for over 40 years and has 250 members, has already raised £200 from the swim and it’s hoped the event will draw in more sponsors still.

Councillor Charles Fraser-Macnamara, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:

“We’re very privileged and proud to have so many talented, enthusiastic and kind hearted youngsters using our leisure facilities.

“I wish both the girls the very best of luck for their swim and would like to say well done to the swimming club for making it possible for them.”

Anyone else who would like to sponsor the girls can call the leisure centre on 01384 812800.
