12 - Anti-vandalism DVD

Archived news release from 2007

A group of young people at a borough school have taken vandalism into their own hands with the help of Brierley Hill area committee.

Representatives from the youth council at the Kingswinford School in Water Street, Kingswinford received £3,500 after applying to the area committee’s capital allocation fund to produce an anti-vandalism DVD.

The DVD, called KCAD (Kingswinford and community anti-vandalism) was seen for the first time at last nights’ area committee.

It aims to raise awareness of vandalism in the local area, tells people what to do if they see vandalism taking place and sends a clear message to those who commit the offences that it will not be tolerated.

The stars of the DVD, Daniel Garden, Daniel Kearns, Harriet Thornton and Daniel Horrocks all appear in the 10-minute film, with Mark Carpenter behind the scenes as cameraman.

Under the criminal damage act 1971, offenders can be reprimanded, issued with a final warning or charged, which will result in appearing before the court, the consequences of which could be a fine or up to 10 years in prison.

The young people were keen to thank Isaiah Ferguson, Kevin Whiting, the graphics team, Dudley Council and external companies, who all helped to produce the DVD.
Councillor Margaret Wilson, chair of Brierley Hill area committee, said:
“This is an excellent DVD and area committee money well spent.  If the young people who have put it together can realise the consequences of vandalism and take a proactive stance in their community then others will too.

“It’s an incredible achievement and I hope it has a real impact.”

The DVD will be sent to all schools as part of the citizenship programme and will be distributed early next year.  A booklet of extras will be ready for Christmas.

The group are already looking to their next projects, which include personal safety and bullying.
