18 - Charter Mark success

Archived news release from 2007

The excellent standards of Dudley Council’s school governance team have been recognised with a national award.

The team has received the prestigious Charter Mark which is awarded for public sector excellence.

The governance team offers a training service to all school governors and governing bodies, supporting them with raising standards, financial decisions and issues relating to staffing and premises. It also provides a clerking service for governing bodies and records and provides guidance at meetings.

The team had to provide evidence that it was performing well against six major criteria; setting standards, actively engaging with customers, partners and staff, being fair and accessible to everyone and promoting choice, continuously developing and improving, using resources effectively and imaginatively and contributing to improving opportunities and quality of life in the communities they serve.

Assessors inspected the work of the team and noted that it was made up of “a very good team of staff, well led and delivering a very high quality, customer focused service.”

They also highlighted that both the clerking and training services are highly regarded by both customers and partners and that the team provided a good performance against standards with high levels of customer satisfaction and a rising trend demonstrated.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:

“This is a tremendous achievement for the team. Winning a Charter Mark is not an easy task and it recognises just how well the team is performing and the quality of the service it is providing.”

Charter Marks are awarded to public sector or voluntary organisations which provide excellent service and promote continual improvement. It is the first time the governance team has achieved the award.
