Christmas and the New Year will be a fun time for most people, however research shows there is a considerable increase in domestic abuse during these times.
Dudley Domestic Abuse Forum warns that with many people spending more time in the pub, alcohol will be a major factor in seeing more violence in the home.
Domestic abuse affects one in four women and in Dudley borough over 30,000 women will be affected by domestic abuse in their lifetime. It is a crime and can affect anyone regardless of age, sex, religion, disability or lifestyle.
Both men and women experience domestic abuse. It accounts for one quarter of all violent crime and it is reported that more than three million children each year witness violence in the home.
Councillor Anne Millward, cabinet member for community safety, commented:
“This time of year should be an enjoyable time for everyone, but sadly many children witness violence in the home and spend much of the festive period feeling scared, upset and often alone with no-one to talk to.
“Domestic abuse is a crime and there are alternatives to staying in an abusive relationship. I would urge anyone who does experience domestic abuse over Christmas and New Year or otherwise to get in touch, there are people who can help.”
