The streets of Dudley have been named the cleanest in the country by a national organisation.
Dudley Council’s street cleansing team has been named the best performer, offering the best value to taxpayers in the country by a national awards body.
Dudley’s team which sweeps roads, cleans up graffiti and helps remove fly-tipping received the accolade of best performer in this year’s Association of Public Service Excellence awards (APSE).
The top spot follows on from the team being named in the top four for the last two years and again highlights the improvements made by the council in keeping the borough tidy.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“This is absolutely fantastic news and we are all very proud to have received this honour. We know there are always improvements that can be made but what this award does show without doubt is that the residents of Dudley are receiving a superior service to many others across the country.
“The fact we have moved into first place after twice coming in the top four shows that we have not become complacent. It is a credit to the hard work of every member of the street cleansing team based at our Lister Road depot.”
The clean streets award follows on from the high profile ‘Don’t Dirty Dudley’ campaign by Dudley Council last year. TV queens of clean, Kim and Aggie, visited the borough to discourage people from dropping litter and were encouraged to help keep the streets clean.
Councillor Adams added:
“While the street cleansing team deserve praise we would also like to thank the people of the borough for playing their part in helping to keep the streets clean. I think we have sent out a clear message that we will not tolerate littering in Dudley and we would like to thank people taking this on board and helping keep Dudley clean.”
APSE look at all aspects of the service provided such as value for money, training of staff and how quickly council’s respond to issues such as fly tipping.
The APSE awards are based on a council’s performance in terms of training, communication and operational service delivery. The awards presented at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool on December 6.
