3 - Kick-off time for top sports facilities at Stourbridge school

Archived news release from 2007

A state-of-the-art £1.2 million artificial football pitch will be launched at a Stourbridge school next month by a top Black Country footballer.

West Bromwich Albion’s Neil Clement will officially get the ball rolling and open the new 3rd generation rubber crumb pitch with floodlights at Redhill School on December 6.

The new pitch, which can be used full size or as four five-a-side pitches, cost £1.2 million and was funded by an £800,000 grant from the Football Foundation and £400,000 from Dudley Council and the school.

The launch event will be held from 6 to 8pm at the school in Junction Road and will include youngsters from West Bromwich Albion’s community programme, Withymoor Colts and Redhill School, getting a chance to try out the new pitch. Neil Clement, or an Albion team-mate will then officially open the new facility at 7pm.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“This is a top quality new facility at another one of the borough’s schools. I hope the pupils at the school will benefit from playing on this new surface for many years to come.”

Brian Heavisides, Headteacher of Redhill School, said:
“This new state-of-the art facility is not only for the pupils of Redhill School but also for the local community.  The centre will allow groups and teams to be able to enjoy and develop the sport at all levels.”

The old Redgra at the school area was replaced with the 3rd generation rubber crumb pitch and a pavilion has been built to house changing rooms, officials’ rooms, an office and a conference or class room.

The grant from the Football Foundation was linked to the school’s Football Development Plan.  The aims of the school’s plan are to provide increased opportunities for girls to participate football in a safe environment. It also aims to develop opportunities for young people within the Asian community to participate in football and too encourage and support the development of football in the local primaries and in the town. It will also Promote Coach Education and become a recognised centre for CPD in Dudley.

In order to achieve these aims the school is working closely with key partners such as West Bromwich Albion FC Community Programme, Withymoor Colts and Birmingham County Football Development.
