7 - Council housing rents to be set at cabinet meeting

Dudley Council’s cabinet will meet next week to consider council housing rents for 2008/9.

The proposal, to go before members, is for average rent for a council home to rise by £3.34 per week from
14 April 2008 to £64.42 per week. Rent levels are set by a strict central government formula designed to equalise public sector rents between all social housing providers (such as housing associations as well as the local council) by 2011.

The full range of the rent increases across all
23,500 Dudley Council properties will see most properties rising by between £2.50 and £4 per week. The rent increases will contribute towards the council meeting the Decent Homes Standard by 2010 – a basic standard of repair and maintenance that all public sector homes must reach.

Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member for housing, said:
‘Our rent increases have, since 2002, been controlled by central government. Despite this latest increase, our rents compare favourably with other local authorities. The rent recalculation is essential in order ensure that we continue to provide a four star service.’
