Residents are urged to join the fight against scams and help prevent others becoming the victim of bogus lotteries, price draws, sweepstakes and get rich schemes.
Dudley Council has teamed up with the Office of Fair Trading and other local authorities for the national month-long Scamnesty campaign.
Designed to raise awareness of mass market scams, the consumer champions are asking people to hand over any recently received mailings.
During February, residents can drop their scam emails and mail about dodgy lotteries, deceptive price draws, sweepstakes, fake psychics, get rich schemes and miracle health cures into the scamnesty bin at the trading standards office in Dudley. This is based in 3 St James’ Road, directly opposite Dudley Library.
The team is also taking their awareness-raising scamnesty campaign and bin on a roadshow to Merry Hill on February 21 and the Cornbow Centre, Halesowen on February 26.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment said:
“Unfortunately many people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, do become the victims of bogus scams and it brings misery to their lives.
“We now want people to fight back and let us know of the latest methods being used.
“By collecting scam mail we can build up crucial intelligence which will help us in our future investigations and prevent others from becoming the victims of scams in the future.
