More than £17 million is to be spent on replacing kitchens and bathrooms in council houses across the borough.
In a report to be considered by cabinet next week, the council proposes to continue improvements by replacing about 2,500 kitchens and 1,900 bathrooms in homes that currently do not meet the government’s Decent Home Standard.
Improvements to a further 1,500 kitchens or bathrooms will also be made to ensure they remain within the standard in the three years programme, which is part of the council’s housing capital programme. These improvements will exceed the Decent Homes Standard.
Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member for housing, said:
‘We are on target to meet the Government’s Decent Homes Standard for all our council properties by 2010. But we don’t want to stop there. Where we can, we want to exceed the standard and ensure thatwe help people to lead fulfilled and independent lives in homes of their choice in safe and active communities’
