A Stourbridge man who threw an empty beer can on the ground in Lye has landed himself a court bill of £350.
Alan Buckingham of Trinity Road in Stourbridge was seen by a police community support officer with the beer can in Lye High Street on August 4 last year. As the area is an alcohol-free zone Buckingham was approached but as the can was empty the officer asked him to place it in the bin. But 25-year-old Buckingham then threw the can down on the ground.
He was issued with a fixed penalty for littering. Numerous letters were then sent to Buckingham but the fine was not paid and a court prosecution was then taken by Dudley Council.
Buckingham did not attend the Dudley Magistrates Court hearing last Thursday (Feb 7). Magistrates fined him £100 and ordered him to pay £250 in costs.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for the environment, said:
“This is yet another case of people failing to show respect to the environment and to each other. I don’t know who these people expect to pick up their rubbish for them and I hope this court bill will help get the message home that littering simply will not be accepted anywhere in the Dudley borough.”
