11 - Safer internet day

Pupil from Dudley visits Brussells for Safer internet day (12 Feb) to raise awareness about the potential dangers to young people and risks associated with the new technology.

Oliver Jones, student from Kingswinford school and a member of Dudley safeguarding children board e-safety group, will fly to Brussells to the first Pan-European Youth Forum on Safer Internet use.

Last September Oliver successfully applied to become a young ambassador on the young people’s panel of CEOP (child exploitation and online protection) centre.  He has attended a number of meetings in London and is dedicated to raising awareness about the potential risks.

Dudley safeguarding children board aims to ensure that all children, young people and parents/carers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to safeguard themselves online.   A CD entitled ‘Know It All’ which is a guide for parents about keeping children safe online, is available and all schools in the borough are able to distribute copies to parents and carers.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:

“The internet is integral to the lives of children of all ages and opens up many new opportunities.  However, it is vital young people understand the potential risks and understand how to stay safe on-line”.

“I would like to congratulate Oliver, he is a superb ambassador for the young people in Dudley and will contribute well to the young people’s panel.  I hope he has a productive and enjoyable trip to Brussells”
