18 - The Magic of Glass at the Red House Glass Cone

Visitors to the Red House Glass Cone in Wordsley can see the science behind the art in a new exhibition by glass makers and supplier Plowden & Thompson.

The exhibition takes visitors on a complete tour of this magical material, showing how the basic material sand is transformed into glass, with all its diverse qualities and uses.

The exhibition contains examples of the raw material, glass rods and finished products which we often forget rely on this unique material for their creation. Items on display include aircraft runway lights, cats eyes, life boat lamps, tubing for x-ray generators and even glass nuggets to put onto fireplaces.

Plowden & Thompson Ltd was established in 1922 on the site of the New Dial Glassworks, itself making glass since 1788.  The range of items made over the years is vast and today the products are at the leading edge of technology and art.

Councillor Charles Fraser Macnamara, cabinet member for leisure and culture said:
“Plowden & Thompson are at the heart of Stourbridge’s glass industry and continue to innovate in the complementary fields of technology and art. This exhibition shows that there is so much more to this unique material than windows and wine glasses.”

The exhibition runs until 29 June. Entry to the cone is free. The cone is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Sunday.  For more information call 01384 812750 or visit www.dudley.gov.uk/redhousecone.
