The winners of the UK Youth Parliament in Dudley election results have just been announced (9 February).
The four successful young politicians were elected from twelve candidates from across the borough and the winners are:
Deputy Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) Josh Lewis from Redhill School, Stourbridge
Deputy MYP Nicola Gill from Dormston School, Sedgley
MYP Cathy Simms from Bishop Milner School, Dudley
MYP Dan Willetts from Hillcrest School, Netherton
The results follow a fortnight of voting from young people aged 11-18 in local schools and colleges.
The new Members of the Youth Parliament (MYP) will now carry out the duties drawn up in their manifestos and take forward the views of young people in Dudley at a local, regional and national level.
In 2007 MYPs from Dudley carried out hundreds of surveys with their young constituents and worked hard on the three national campaigns. They helped lobby the government for better sex and relationship education, cheaper public transport and votes at 16.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children services, said:
“The youth parliament gives young people a real insight into how democracy works and the ways in which they can contribute to policy making. The four winners will now have twelve months to help make a difference to the lives of other young people in Dudley borough. I would like to congratulate them on their success and wish them all the best for the coming months.”
