Primary and secondary school pupils are set to take part in a series of youth debates at Dudley Council’s chamber next week.
Over 70 youngsters, from 12 Dudley borough schools, will talk about various issues including respect for other people, the true meaning of Christmas, war and intensive farming on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 February.
The Mayor of Dudley councillor David Stanley will chair some of the religious themed debates, which will start at 9am on both days. It’s hoped the debates will help the youngsters, aged nine to 12,to develop their speaking skills while learning more about issues that affect the way we live.
Primary schools talking part are: Thorns, Bromley Hills, St James’s, Alder Coppice, Hurst Hill and Caslon. Secondary schools taking part are: Pedmore TC, Hillcrest, Ellowes Hall, Wordsley High, Earls and Holly Hall.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children services, said:
“As a councillor who uses the council chamber on a regular basis it’s great to see young people occupying the space to talk about issues that are important to them.
“It’s a great opportunity for children to practice speaking in front of other people and I’m sure we’ll all learn a lot from what they have to say.”
The religious youth debates take place every year in February. For more information on the youth debates call Dilwyn Hunt on 01384 813764.
