Borough carers are urged to sign up to a course this month which will recognise and develop their skills as carers.
Unpaid carers who complete the City and Guilds - learning for living course will achieve a certificate in personal development and learning.
The course is one of many organised by Dudley Council to give people who care for a relative or friend with a disability or long term illness more training and education opportunities during 2008.
Participants will study four key areas, which include moving forward, taking care, managing caring and living with others. As part of the course participants can study at home or online plus there will be monthly group sessions, tutor support, IT sessions and group meetings to suit student needs. One to one sessions may also be available.
The course is suitable for carers who need to find direction following bereavement or if the person they cared for has gone into residential care.
Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:
“This course is about encouraging the borough’s unpaid carers to develop their existing skills and achieve a recognised qualification, which could help them when looking for employment or to volunteer.”
The course is free to carers on means tested benefits. Other carers may be able to claim a carers’ direct payment.
The course is for both current and recent carers. For more information or to find if this course is suitable for you contact Christine Rowley, Dudley Council’s carers’ coordinator on 01384 818723 or Kathy Glazzard on 01384 813960. Alternatively go to www.cityandguilds.co.uk/learningforliving
In order to secure the course ten carers must enrol. To enrol go to the adult training centre at Merry Hill on Saturday January 26.
