22 - Consumer champions spread the word

Students will get a lesson on knowing their rights when they receive a visit from Dudley’s consumer champions.

Dudley Council’s trading standards officers are visiting Dudley and Stourbridge colleges in the coming weeks to raise awareness and give advice.

Students can pit their wits against each other on consumer issues in the ‘Can I have my money back mate’ quiz, and be in with the chance of winning a DVD player, donated by the Dudley Life Skills partnership.

They will also be able to apply for a free CitizenCard proof of age card, which is supported by the council and local police.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment, said:

“We want to arm our young consumers with all the information and advice they will need now and in the future.

“There will be a display of services and advice provided by trading standards, including, crime prevention, cold calling and underage sales. Officers will be giving consumer information and advice and will be more than happy to answer specific questions on issues students may be facing.

“It’s also a great opportunity to get a free CitizenCard, which is a nationally recognised ID card backed by the council and the police.”

The events take place at Dudley College, Broadway Campus, on January 30 from 9.30am and at Stourbridge College (Advanced Technology Centre) The Waterfront, Merry Hill, on February 19 from 9.30am.

A CitizenCard photographer will be on site at both venues between 9.30am and 3.30pm for anyone wanting to take advantage of getting a free ID card, which normally costs £9 plus a photograph.

Any school or college who would like to receive a similar visit can contact Lorraine Ingram, education & enterprise officer on 01384 814668 for further information.
