The Friends of the Wrens Nest group are bringing back the ancient art of hedgelaying to Wrens Nest nature reserve in Dudley this Saturday (Jan 26).
The event, held on the Mons Hill College fields, Wrens Hill Road starts from 10am and the public are welcome to go along and meet members of the friends group and to find out about this fascinating countryside skill.
The event is strictly limited to members of the friends group. Anyone wishing to join for £3 per year should contact the group in advance on 07768 487382. People are also welcome to go along to observe and learn more about the group’s activities or the ancient art of hedgelaying.
The hedge will act as a vital green corridor linking the two wooded sides of Wren’s Nest Hill. The hedge provides a home to countless small mammals and invertebrates and also important foraging habitat for a nearby population of bats. Connecting the two sides of the nature reserve in this way will facilitate movement of species and avoid populations becoming isolated and eventually extinct.
Anyone interested in joining the Wrens Nest Friends group should call 07768 487382 or the senior warden on 01384 812785. Those wishing just to observe on Saturday and chat to the group should park on the Mons Hill College car park. The group will be hedgelaying on the field behind the car park.
