More Dudley school children have achieved five or more GCSE grades A* - C than ever before, according to national performance tables published today (Thursday).
An impressive 56.9% of pupils achieved five or more GCSE grades A*- C compared to 55.8% last year. Figures are also on the up for pupils achieving five or more GCSE grades A*- C including English and maths. Dudley schools out performed neighbouring boroughs with 43.6% compared to 43% in 2006, making results the best in the Black Country.
The top performing schools achieving five or more GCSE grades A* - C including English and maths include Old Swinford Hospital (89%), Bishop Milner Catholic School (68%), Windsor High School (62%), The Kingswinford School and Science College (58%) and The Summerhill School (57%). Over the next three years the rate of progress is expected to increase further with enhanced funding from the Black Country City Challenge, aimed at raising educational attainment and aspiration.
There were also significant improvements at a number of schools on last year’s results. The 2006 figures are in brackets. Holly Hall Maths and Computing College 46% (31%), Kingswinford School and Science College 58% (45%), Ellowes Hall Sports College 43% (39%) and Bishop Milner Catholic School 68% (64%).
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“I am delighted more children than ever before have achieved five or more GCSE grades A* - C. This is the fifth year results have increased and standards have improved at borough schools. I would like to congratulate all the pupils and staff for all their hard work over the last year.”
The progress of pupils between the ages of 11 – 16 (key stage 2 – key stage 4) is above the national average. Pupils have shown greatest progress between ages 11 – 16 at The Sutton School and Specialist College, Halesbury School, Rosewood School, Old Swinford Hospital, Wordsley High School and Hillcrest School and Community College.
Meanwhile A level and AS levels at borough colleges have also increased. The average point score per student in 2006 was 694.4 compared to 733.8 in 2007, putting the borough above the national average.
