Two men caught dropping litter in Lye have each landed court bills of more than £300.
Stuart Colledge of Valley Road in Lye and Lloyd Robert Smith of Thorns Road in Quarry Bank received the court fines after they failed to pay fines issued to them within 14 days of the offence.
Colledge, 21, was seen by a police community support officer dropping a cigarette end in Bromley Street on July 12. He was stopped and issued with a fine but despite a reminder letter he failed to pay the fixed penalty fine.
Smith, 22, was also spotted by a police community support officer on August 20 dropping litter in Lye High Street. Smith also failed to respond to numerous letters so a court prosecution was instigated.
Both offenders failed to attend Dudley Magistrates Court at their hearings last Thursday (January 24). They were both found guilty in their absence and were each fined £100 and ordered to pay £250 costs, payable within 28 days.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for the environment, said:
“People need to show some respect to the environment and to each other. These latest court fines are a warning to everyone that we will prosecute people for littering. These offenders had 14 days to pay the £50 fixed penalty fine but failed to do so. I hope this court fine will ensure they are regretting their actions and will stop them from being so irresponsible in the future.”
