Councillor David Stanley will be opening a new exhibition in honour of local football hero Duncan Edwards this week.
The exhibition of sporting memorabilia includes photos of Edwards, press cuttings from the time, his sports shirts and England caps. It is timed to commemorate the 50th anniversary year of Edward’s death.
Edwards, along with other players from the 1958 Manchester United team and sports journalists died as a result of a plane crash in February 1958.
The exhibition ‘Duncan Edwards 50 Years On’ runs from 5 January to 24 May and is the forerunner to a dedicated Duncan Edwards display space which will be opened in May. This will be a purpose built gallery to house the museum’s extensive collection of Edwards memorabilia. It will also commemorate the borough’s other sporting legends including jumper Joe Derby.
This museum has also lent two of Edward’s caps and shirts to the Maunchester United Football Museum at Old Trafford as part of an exhibition commemorating all of the players who died in the crash.
Mayor of Dudley, Councillor David Stanley said:
“I’m honoured to be involved in this project which celebrates the career of one of the borough’s great sporting heroes. I look forward to the opening of the dedicated gallery later in the year.”
The museum on St James’s Road, Dudley is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
