22 - UK Youth Parliament elections

Twelve young people from Dudley are busy campaigning for votes this week as elections for the UK Youth Parliament get underway in secondary schools and colleges.

From Monday 21 January – Friday 1 February young people aged 11-18 from across the borough will vote for their preferred representative.

The candidates attended a training day in December where they discussed local issues for young people and learned how to become more active in their communities.  They then wrote their manifestos to highlight their main priorities should they get elected.

Successful candidates elected as Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) will be required to carry forward the views of young people in Dudley at a local, regional and national level.  The representatives from all corners of the borough are competing for four Dudley seats and the election results will be announced on Saturday 9 February in Dudley Council House.

In 2007 MYPs from Dudley carried out hundreds of surveys with their young constituents and worked hard on the three national campaigns.  They helped lobby the government for better sex and relationship education, cheaper public transport and votes at 16.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children services, said:

“The UK Youth Parliament provides an superb opportunity for young people to represent their views directly to government ministers and to campaign for real change on issues that really matter to them.

“All young people aged 11 – 18 in Dudley borough are entitled to vote for their MYP and we hope to receive a record number of votes this year. I encourage everyone to use their vote and have a say in choosing this year’s members.”
