11 - Young people in Dudley reach landmark in Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Young people in Dudley have reached a landmark in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards with the 1,100th gold being presented at a special ceremony.

The Mayor of Dudley presented the awards to around 40 people at Saltwells education centre in Netherton.

A range of activities had to be completed to achieve the top award including a 50-mile expedition and learning a new skill such as a musical instrument or learning to drive.

It also included helping in the community, taking part in a physical activity such as aerobics or football and completing a four-night residential activity such as conservation work or an outward bound course.

Councillor David Stanley, Mayor of Dudley said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for the young people and for Dudley in celebrating the borough’s 1,100th gold in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award since they began in 1956.

“It is wonderful to see young people achieving such high standards and they should be proud to take part in such a prestigious awards scheme.”
