8 - Tales in the outdoors

A fantastic outdoor storytelling zone has been created in Netherton to help children and their families enjoy learning together in the fresh air.

The shaded zone is based in Netherton Park and can be used by local schools or groups for outdoor learning events and celebrations.

Netherton Park Children’s Centre worked in partnership with the Friends of the Park group, Netherton library and local parents to apply for Awards for All Funding aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities in the Netherton area.

The project was granted £10,000 which has been used to pay for the outdoor story telling zone. The money has also enabled children under five and their parents to attend learn to swim sessions, provided aerobics sessions for parents attending the children’s centre, and will fund growing and cooking projects based at Netherton Park Children’s Centre.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:

“This is a wonderful idea that I hope will encourage children and their families to enjoy learning in the outdoors.

“It is great to see different groups within the local community working together so effectively.”

Simon Toyne, integrated services manager at Netherton Park Children’s Centre, said:

“This money has allowed us to provide some really positive services for children and their families and has left a lasting legacy in Netherton Park.”

The storytelling zone will be officially launched on Saturday, July 12 during the annual Netherton Park fun day.

Families and children can enjoy a number of stories and songs over the course of the day with a professional storyteller and local volunteers.

The launch will also include a cheque presentation to celebrate the granting of the award.

The storytelling zone remains a permanent feature in the park that can be used by any local schools or groups for future outdoor events, celebrations or gatherings.
