Dudley businesses will be visited to ensure that children engaged in part time work are safe and employed within the law.
Dudley Council’s education welfare service will be taking part in National Child Employment Week from 28 July – 1August 08. Education welfare officers will be visiting businesses across the borough to raise awareness of the child employment legislation.
The Children and Young Persons Act, 1933 states that no child below the age of 13 may be employed. Additionally, the legislation contains limits on working hours and provides restrictions on the types of employment children can undertake.
Those employing school age children will be reminded of their responsibility as employers. Anyone found to be in contravention of the child employment regulations could face legal action by Dudley Council.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“Priority must be given to safeguarding children’s educational needs, their welfare, health and safety. Our aim is not to stop young people of compulsory school age working, rather to ensure their safety and wellbeing whilst employed. “
Businesses can contact the education welfare service on 01384 814314 for further details about child employment regulations.
