Dudley libraries are offering a host of sports themed activities for children to enjoy throughout the summer holidays.
From ‘Sporty Bingo’ to ‘Horsing Around’ craft sessions, during July and August there are loads of activities available for children aged four to11 years, as part of the annual Summer Reading Challenge.
Every library in the borough is running a timetable of events including craft sessions where children can make pop-up cards or replica Olympic torches to celebrate the theme of this year’s challenge which is Team Read in support of the Beijing Olympics 2008. Some workshops have age restrictions or are ticket only so people should contact their library in advance to find out more.
Forthcoming activities include ‘Hang up your boots’ at Brierley Hill Library on 31 July and ‘Bright Sparks’ at Coseley Library on 1 August. Children in Stourbridge can join in with ‘Sporty Bingo’ on 15 August while children in Gornal Library will be taking part in hobby horse crafts on 4 August.
Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said:
“I’m sure local parents will be pleased to hear about the planned activities for children in our libraries this summer. I hope every local child takes up the Summer Reading Challenge as it can help them maintain their reading skills in preparation for their new school year.”
Last year the challenge was an immense success with 2,300 children taking part. Libraries are hoping that this year even more children will sign up to read six books before September 6.
